Queen Elizabeth II marks 94th birthday without fanfare

Written by on April 22, 2020

Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday celebrated her 94th birthday with silence as the world at large is in lockdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, the usual gun salutes and the ringing of bells were absent from the celebration.

The queen decided that the celebratory show of military firepower would not be appropriate. A celebratory peal of bells at Westminster Abbey will not take place as the church where the queen was married and crowned is currently closed.

The royal family shared on social media images of Queen Elizabeth as she marked the occasion. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan held a video call with her to wish her a happy birthday while other family members were also expected to telephone and video call the monarch privately to deliver their birthday messages.

Private family footage of the monarch as a young princess was also shared by the royal family. The Royal Collection Trust archive film showed Elizabeth playing on a seesaw and in a garden with her sister, the late Princess Margaret.
