Today on the Morning Switch, hosted by Uncle Mark, Victoria Sibiya, and Ronnie McVex, Next Radio featured Dr. Birungi Deusdedit, Co-investigator of the DMD Register at CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital, to raise awareness about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare but life-altering genetic condition.

Dr. Birungi explained that DMD affects about 99% of boys, with only rare cases reported in girls. Many females, however, are carriers of the gene and unknowingly pass it on to their children. The condition gradually weakens muscles, often leading to loss of mobility and severe complications.

He added that DMD was first described in the 1860s by French physician Guillaume Duchenne, but despite decades of knowledge, awareness in Uganda remains critically low. This lack of awareness limits opportunities for early diagnosis, proper management, and family support.

At CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital, initiatives such as the DMD Register are helping to collect vital data, improve interventions, and support advocacy. Dr. Birungi stressed that raising awareness, building partnerships, and educating communities are key steps toward better outcomes for affected children and their families.

Through Next Radio, conversations like these are amplifying health awareness and drawing national attention to conditions that are often overlooked.
