Uganda’s star athlete Joshua Cheptegei continued his amaing run of form last weekend by winning the prestigious 2-mile race of the Eugene Diamond League on Saturday in the United States of America.

Cheptegei 24, started by setting the pace all the way to the 400m mark, before rival and Tokyo Olympics 10,000m gold medalist Selemon Barega from Ethiopia tried unsuccessfully to dislodge him.

The Olympic 5,000m champion crossed the finishing line in 8:09.55 which is a world-leading mark, to beat Ethiopia’s Barega who posted 8:09:82. His compatriot Jacob Kiplimo came 4th in same race where he posted 8 minutes 10:16 seconds.

The result crowns a great month for the long distance ace who won the 5,000m race a few days back at the just concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and silver in the 10,000m final.

Cheptegei was the only Ugandan to finish on the podium at this Wanda Diamond League, with Olympic gold medalist Peruth Chemutai finishing seventh in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Halima Nakaayi sixth in the women’s 800m and Winnie Nanyondo coming fourth in the women’s 1500m.
